SRINAGAR STAMBH

2018

The ‘Srinagar Stambh’, constructed in Paper-Maché is a running length enveloped in white. A marriage of Indian handicrafts with modern aesthetics, five arched lengths, sit inversely over the other. The  craft, famous in Kashmir, is practiced by the ‘Sakhta makers,’ who layer these forms with hand mixed paper pulp before the finishing stage which can spread across weeks.

The rings of light create a floating illusion, drawing your attention to the textured tops of the highly skilled craftsman, a homage to Kashmir named after the breath-taking city of Srinagar.
